Comments: Dear AVS: Just wanted you to know that I found my husbands old Navy buddy, after trying for many years. I submitted another message to your Bullentin Board, and that evening another "good patriot" emailed me back to say he lived near the birth place of the guy I was searching for, and to "hold on" he was gonna make some calls, I did not get my hopes up, because I had called every name in the Telephone directory that was listed with that last name. I was afraid our FRED was deceased . I have spent alot of money thru other agencies to no avail.I became of member of AVS last year. Anyway, Al Brown from Talladega, Alabama found our FRED in 1 /2 of a day, emailed me back, after talking to Fred and he was just as anxious to speak to my husband, they have not seen each other since the late 50's. It was a great reunion, my husband is not one to tear-up easily but he did talking to FRED. He did not have any idea of my search, so he was doubly surprised, I cried too. We have made plans to visit FRED, when we retrun

Our conuntry and it's veterans deserve better than Bill Clinton. We must not allow a new breed of America to forget the price paid. We must not allow a youthful America to think that this freedom will last without the veterans of the future. We must not fall prey to the hollow call from the left that America is in danger of itself. We must not encourage the illuision of hatred and division the Clinton Administration has left as a legacy. We must unite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Veterans must unite. Your site, American Veteran Search, from all I have seen in review, is more than a search engine for veterans in search of thier fellow veterans. American Veterans Search is a call in the darkness to America to not allow itself to stay asleep a

Comments: From: MikeyRVP To: VetsSearch Rich,Jack and the Crew at AVS, I have spent the better part of two hours reviewing thoroughly the American Veterans Search site. I am incredibly amazed at the growth and the competant manor in which you have taken to bring this worthwhile endeavor to America's Veterans. Veterans mostly forgotten by the citizens who enjoy their freedom fought and won with tremendous sacrifice by veterans. Veterans prepared to fight, and having given of themselves in many conflicts throughout American history, deserve more. It is obvious your tremendous love of our American Veterans who served their country. We live in times when most citizens choose, to sit quietly and relaxed, maintaining their own original state of apathetic, day to day existence, allowing the standards of American freedom to be removed one inch at a time. You have begun to build a path for the world to see that America is more than the Daily movement of money on the Dow. That Veterans deserve more as our current rackete

Comments: From an Army doctor in San Antonio, Texas. Powerful stuff. ========================================================================== I am a doctor specializing in Emergency Medicine in the Emergency Departments of the only two military Level One trauma centers. They are both in San Antonio, TX and they care for civilian emergencies as well as military personnel. San Antonio has the largest military retiree population in the world living here because of the location of these two large military medical centers. As a military doctor in training for my specialty I work longhours and the pay is less than glamorous. One tends to become jaded by the long hours, lack of sleep, food, family contact and the endless parade of human suffering passing before you. The arrival of another ambulance does not mean more pay, only more work. Most often it is a victim from a motor vehicle crash. Often it is a person of dubious character who has been shot or stabbed. With our large military retiree population it is often a nursing home patient. Even with my enlisted service and minimalcombat experience in Panama prior to medical school, I have caught myself groaning when the ambulance brought in yet another sick, elderly person from one of the local retirement centers that cater to military retirees. I had not stopped to think of what citizens of this age group represented. I saw "Saving Private Ryan". I was touched deeply. Not so much by the carnage in the first 30 minutes, but by the sacrifices ofso many. I was touched most by the scene of the elderly survivor at the graveside asking his wife if he'd been a good man. I realized that I had seen these same men and women coming through my Emergency Dept and had not realized what magnificent sacrifices they had made. The things they did for me and everyone else that has lived on this planet since the end of that conflict are priceless. Situation permitting I now try to ask my patients about their experiences. They would never bring up the subject without the inquiry. I have been privileged to an amazing array of experiences recounted in the brief minutes allowed in an Emergency Dept encounter. These experiences have revealed the incredible individuals I have had the honor of serving in a medical capacity, many on their last admission to the hospital. There was a frail, elderly woman who reassured my young enlisted medic trying to start an IV line in her arm. She remained calm and poised despite her illness and the multiple needle-sticks into her fragile veins. She was what we call a "hard stick." As the medic made another attempt I noticed a number tattooed across her forearm. I touched it with one finger and looked into her eyes. She simply said "Auschwitz." Many of later generations would have loudly and openly berated the young medic in his many attempts. How different was the response from this person who'd seen unspeakable suffering. A long retired Colonel who as a young USN officer had parachuted from his burning plane over a pacific island held by the Japanese. Now an octogenarian, his head cut in a fall at home where he lived alone. His CT scan and suturing had been delayed until after midnight by the usual parade of high priority ambulance patients. Still spry for his age, he asked to use the phone to call a taxi to take him home then realized his ambulance had brought him without his wallet. He asked if he could use the phone to make a long distance call to his daughter who lived 70 miles away. With great pride, we told him that he could not as he'd done enough for his country and the least we could do was get him a taxi home, even if we had to pay for it ourselves. My only regret was that my shift wouldn't end for several hours and I couldn't drive him myself. I was there the night MSG Roy Benavidez came through the Emergency Dept for the last time. He was very sick. I was not the doctor taking care of him but I walked to his bedside and took his hand. I said nothing. He was so sick he didn't know I was there. I'dread his Congressional Medal of Honor citation and wanted to shake his hand. He died a few days later. The gentleman who served with Merrill's Marauders, the survivor of the Baatan Death March, the survivor Omaha Beach, the 101 year old World War I veteran, the former POW held in frozen North Korea, the former Special Forces medic now with non-operable liver cancer, the former Viet Nam Corps Commander -- I remember these citizens. I may still groan when yet another ambulance comes in, but now I am much more aware of what an honor it is to serve these particular men and women. I am angered at the cutbacks, implemented and proposed, that will continue to decay their meager retirement benefits. I see the President and Congress who would turn their back on these individuals who've sacrificed so much to protect our liberty. I see later generations that seems to be totally engrossed in abusing these same liberties won with such sacrifice. It has become my personal endeavor to make the nurses and young enlisted medics aware of these amazing individuals when I encounter them in our Emergency Dept. Their response to these particular citizens has made me think that perhaps all is not lost in the next generation. My experiences have solidified my belief that we are losing an incredible generation and this nation knows not what it is losing. Our uncaring government and ungrateful civilian populace should all take note. We should all remember that we must " Earn this." Rangers Lead the way! CPT Stephen R. Comments: I want to thank the AVS search team...I posted a message on the bulletin board, looking for 4 Marine buddies, and within hours, Jack from AVS, had already found 1 and the son of another buddy, who had passed on. I talked to my 1st pal, Bill, and it was like the 48 years that seperated us, just disappeared! Next---I talked to my buddy's son who was only 10 months old when his Dad died in an accident, just a few years after discharge. (he's 42, now) He was thrilled to talk with me about his Dad and I was grateful for the opportunity to tell him what a great guy his father was and how I had never forgotten him! I just want to tell all you other vets---don't give up your search---someone out there is still thinking about you and missing the old connection...I posted on every vet bulletin board I could find, with no results, until I tried one more time at vetransearch.com..... Peace to you all, Roger Libby "70 yrs old---and STILL PROUD"!

Comments: I was absolutely amazed by this site. It is so valuable to those men/women looking for others that they left so long ago. Now, they have this avenue to, not only find a fellow Veteran, but, perhaps to have closure to events that have haunted them for years. You've done an outstanding job of giving them that chance and I applaud you for your brilliance. Thank you for sharing love and the ability to give others hope. Your reward will be rich. Kudos!

He served there from July 18, 1968 to February 4th, 1969, when he died at Pleiku, LZ Oasis. I'm a reporter for the Baltimore Sun, and I'm writing a feature about Augustus because his name appears in the background of a new stamp commemorating the Wall. Anything I can learn about his experience in Vietnam would greatly inform this story. Thanks. Lisa Pollak baltimore, md USA -

I started my search for lost Marine Corps friends only 2 days ago, and have found that Vets really do stick together. I recently went through a very bad divorce and began the struggle of my life with 2 teenagers. I turned immediately to the one group that was always there for me, and found out that they still are. Thank you my Veteran Brothers and Sisters. You are my family. I feel like I can go on and survive. I can't tell you what that means. As a Marine I was taught to be strong, complete the mission... Would you believe that I've been searching for 32 years. So if anyone knows please let "Doc" hear from you.

Comments: Dear Rich, God Bless You. What fantastic news upon boot up this morning. Wow! I thought some of these guys were lost forever. What a fantastic service you guys provide and your level of commitment is beyond mention. What you guys have done and have been able to sustain attest to the deep sense of friendship, love and camaraderie that service in the armed forces generates. I think at times that bonds of friendship are created that even transcend family relationships. Thank you - thank you - thank you. David and I used to play the defensive backfield on the flight football team and we were the opposition's worst nightmare. Boy oh boy, Dave and I got a lot to catch up on - 30 years worth. Obviously, your reward are the overjoyed responses like mine. Well deserved. Thank you, God Bless You and keep up the good work. Any of my testimonials may freely and without reservation, be added to your site. Your guys are great! If you are as successful at tracking the rest of the guys on the list, then you'll end

Comments: I am searching for Gerald Burkett, who was a buddy of my fathers during their time in the Army. Dad's name is John William Kestner, and he is 60 years old now. Dad and Gerald were in Vietnam during 65-67, both in a Quartermaster Unit. Dad said they went in to set up camp for a company that would soon follow. When the company got there dad and his unit would go onto the next set up area. I am not sure about Gerald's middle name, Dad says he thinks it started with an R. Gerald was originally from Pennsylvania and lived only with his mother, never having mentioned his father. I can only assume that Gerald is around my dad's age. I have found a service record number for a Jerry R. Burkett. Does anyone have an idea if using that number to search would get me anywhere? Gerald went by Jerry while dad and he were friends. My dad doesn't talk much about Vietnam, but I think that finding Gerald it would help to close a chapter in his life that he needs to bring some closure to. Dad has one picture of Jerry, and in the picture he has dark hair, black I would guess, and black rimmed glasses. If anyone could help me I would greatly appreciate it. I have searched many places and have come up empty handed, so I finally resorted to hiring a PI who after 4 months of searching has also come up with nothing. God Bless you and thanks for any help you can offer.
